assignment 4 composition Bryan McDonnell

I know it's a little late, but I just had ACL surgery last Wednesday.  Anyway this is my composition magazine layout assignment.  These are some really nice photographs we took as part of our Humoru photo shoot.  I haven't been able to use this one on campus because of the suggestion of suicide but I really like the picture so I figured I would use it for this assignment.  I think the black background gives the ad a nice solid balance with the dark logo on the right, also the black tie helps ... tie it all together.  I was questioning on whether or not to add the vertical use of my name but I think it makes the add look better.  I like that it's simple but gets the point across and hopefully it grabs the viewer right away.

Assignment #4 - Ashley Frehner

I used a picture I took in Cordoba to create a travel ad of sorts for the city. The architecture there is really beautiful and I feel like the bridge exhibits this. The color palette I incorporated in editing the photo includes various shades and tints of the sandy colored bridge and is also used in the word "Cordoba." I placed and sized the words in the upper left hand corner just so, so that the copy and portion of the bridge in the lower left corner would balance out. I cropped some of the building in the lower left corner out so that the leading lind of the bridge would move the eyes across the pages to the castle/bridge structure at the end and then to the city and hills behind it and above.

Porter Chelson Assignment #4

I recently did a photo-essay for a class about hiking the Y, so with that in mind I put together a layout about the story that could be included in a magazine. The picture shows two pages that would be right next to each other. I tried to use pictures that would draw people in, and I think the photo on the right particularly would make someone stop and want to read the story. I tried to compose the pages so neither the text or the photo would be overbearing.

Dillon Olsen Assignment #4

So this was a picture taken last summer by my friend. I was thinking really deeply, and didn't really notice she took the picture until right when she took it. I've always been motivated by the power that an idea has. There is a quote from the movie "V for Vendetta" that says ideas are bulletproof. I love the fact that ideas have, do, and will keep changing the world, whether its with one person or many. As for the design of the photo, ideas come from the head, and so I wanted the word idea to be close to my head as I was having a big idea at that moment. And I wanted to have a feeling of continuation as you follow the word idea, to the head, to the rest of the quote. I was going for a pretty simple and honest feel to the picture. the fact that there is a group of people on the other side of the reflection pool contrasts the idea of me being alone, which adds to the thoughtfulness.

Assignment #4- Keith Hubert- Boys are back in town

I used the Rule of thirds for placing the subjects and used a grid system to create the blinds with a sketch filter applied over with slowly fading opacities towards the subjects.  I took this picture myself and I wanted a rustic relaxed feeling towards these bros hanging out in class.  I liked the separation between the top and bottom two subjects.

With this photo, I tried to Have the Angel Moroni/the temple follow the rule of thirds. I then monochromed the photo, but tried to bring back the gold from the Angel Moroni with the text.  I decided to break the text at "higher" just because I thought it would be a good play-on-words.

Ventura California postcard

This is a picture I took of the Ventura beach/pier right after sunset. The lighting on the beach plus the rocks guide the eye from the bottom left of the page to the beginning of the pier then left to the end of the pier. The waves also guide the eye from mid left to the beginning of the pier. The beginning of the pier lays on  the top right intersection when using the rule of thirds. The colors are cool, soft and relaxing. The type also gives a relaxing feel to the image.

I'm helping my brother's band Foreign Figures with management, marketing, social/web presence etc. They're one of many Provo bands on the rise. They work really hard to make their passion their main priority; not just a hobby. The band has a photographer and artist, so building the website through blogspot has been very easy, thanks to all the professional resources. Just this month band's online presence got them recognized by DevinSupertramp and LanVi productions who asked if they could shoot a free music video for them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1it13ZYGax0
They're playing a show next Friday (April 3) at Gezzo Hall in Provo. Their music and tickets are available on the site.

I took this photo on my brothers table. I wanted the layout to look completely natural but also pleasing to the eye. The colors of the plates make the photo pop and stand out, creating a balance on both sides of the page. The milk and juice on both sides as well. I tried to pair everything up on both sides of the page. Napkins, 3 kolaches on each side, 2 boxes, 2 cups, 2 drinks, etc. The composition is a balanced one with no side over powering the next.

Composition - Robert Hill

This video was made entirely in After Effects, using clipart from the internet. During the scene the old man is shown from only two angles: one, over his shoulder, looking at the chair which is his goal; and the other angle is a wide view from the side. The side view is continued through almost the whole video, emphasizing his slow, tedious progress towards his chair, while the over-the-shoulder adds a little feeling into his movement--we see what he wants, and he is working steadily towards it. So we want him to reach the chair, after all his struggles to get there, but just before he reaches it the bunny clobbers him. The last shot was a little closer and differently composed: instead of the old man being on a third, where he was in the previous shot, he is in the center, framed by the clock and the chair on which the bunny now sits. The bunny is higher in the frame than the old man, signifying his dominance, and the old man is stuck in between things, indicating he is being controlled by the bunny.

This is an advertisement I created for my ad class for the brand Osprey. This photo was taken specifically for this ad, that I helped create the concept for and set up. Because this company is for outdoors equipment, we kept the colors in the photo darker and more woodsy with the flannel, but we also included the color of the brand with the red and grey. I increased the saturation of the picture to match the rich colors in the trees and made the logo more opaque so it didn't detract from the photo. The body copy is really light on the bottom, because it is made for a magazine and it's not supposed to be super bold, so the tagline stands out more.

Here I took a panoramic photo when I was skiing in France this past winter. This was taken before a touring up a courloir in Chamonix. I paired it with a ski equipment company called Black Diamond and treated it as if this would be a internet ad that could be run on the top bar of a website or in a magazine as well. I pixelated the image to give it a less professional feel and as give it a sense that it was taken with just a cellphone. I softened the image to give the shadows of the mountain a deeper feel and also make the sky really pop which draws your eye to the logo and the ad phrase "The Journey Starts Here" which I created. I then made the text a soft grey with opacity to now overpower the rest of the colors and almost blend in with the colors I chose.

For this assignment I decided to make an advertisement for New York City that would increase tourism. I decided that for the composition of this piece I wanted to stress simplicity. That is why I only used gray and black for my color scheme and used a simple graphic. I made the graphic in Photoshop and tried my best to make it look like it was spray painted onto the sidewalk to add to the realism and credibility of the piece. I also used the rule of thirds when it came to the placement of my text which is 1/3 of the way up in the photo. I love the idea of doing this as a photo series with mountains in it for one that promotes Utah or the Gateway Arch for Missouri!

Assignment #4-Trip advisor

This is intended to be a print ad for trip advisor. I am obsessed with traveling, and I live on trip advisor when planning my vacations. As soon as I am done with a vacation, I always get the itch to go on another one. And I always want to go somewhere new. This ad embodies what I feel when I am done. The picture is of me in Australia at the beach. The sun is setting behind me which kind of symbolizes "the end", but also I am looking away from the sunset as if I am looking for something else, or my next adventure. The rays of the sun, the ridge line of the hill with my gaze, point to the copy or message of the ad. The font matches the trip advisor logo. The text is also left aligned with the logo. The ad is evenly balanced as far as content on both sides.

My (art)Form

The word composition carries many different meanings. In dance, composition means incorporating your body, natural rhythm, music, and area to express yourself. For a visual artist, composition can also mean the incorporation of various elements and ideas to create a message.

For this assignment, I decided to play. As a dancer, composition is critical. I make a lot of videos, but this assignment helped me to implement the principles from class. As you can see, I focused on perspective by having the hallways create lines gathering to a point. Throughout the video, my movements help to establish the foreground. I edited the original video footage through color correction, and tried to create a glow effect for the hallway. Composition also meant to organize the individual video files and music to create my message.

This class teaches us about the nature of art, and how it is the "outward expression of an inward emotion/feeling." This is my art form.

For my design, I tried to create something that would be a poster in any public place or even a magazine ad that reaches out to families, inspiring them to spend more time together.  The idea is kind of to follow some of the church campaigns that have been broadcast recently with hashtags such as "#sharegoodness" and "#sharethegift."  I took this photo outside of the Provo temple right at "golden hour" and I thought it was an amazing shot of this cute family enjoying the last few moments of sunlight together.  I edited the photo by slightly increasing the saturation to warm it up a bit to go for the "golden" feel, then I lightened it and increased the contrast slightly as well to make the silhouettes of the family stand out more.  Without cropping it, the parent's shadows were situated pretty well for "rule of thirds," and I think that naturally falls on the sun right above them as the focus.  I added a little star/sun shape near the words to make the idea of "golden hour" stick even more.  And lastly, I made sure to make the "#familyfirst" hashtag not completely white, but a golden off white so as not to throw off the composition.  I tried to keep the whole thing clean and simple, going for a minimalist theme.

For this project I decided to make on online portfolio mock up for myself. This would be the top of he Account Management tab under my work. I made this in photoshop, and the picture in the header is one that was taken in Ireland that I think shows a bit of my personality. I wanted to make a lay out that has a bit of weight to it so I used the picture off center and used the bar of text to balance out the layout. I also used a green as the background that has an extremely low opacity because I thought it worked well with the image and the low opacity was to give the layout a subconscious cooler tone.

DOGUE
I did a magazine cover featuring my dog Lulu, who I dressed up and posed for hours. I wanted to do a spin-off of the Vogue Magazine. I worked with a ton of alignment on this, making sure the text stayed in the proper columns. Then I moved the text so that your eye would slowly move down the page to the final lower title. However, I also had to figure in the color changes needed for the text to standout against the background and be legible so I used two font colors. I know this is acceptable because Vogue did it on the Beyonce issue last year.
Also, I used a lot of different fonts to give each "story" its own personality, which may have been distracting. Idk, what do you think?

I used a photograph my husband and I took in Bryce Canyon to incorporate the outdoorsy-ness of the brand. Ideally, the iPhone would have an example of what the app would look like, but he is still in the planning phases of building the app so I don't have a visual representation of what it will actually look like. I tried to convey a simple, clean layout with a clear call to action to go and download the app.

Assignment #4 - Santa Monica Pier "Postcard"

SANTA MONICA PIER - Postcard
My wife and I had the privilege of traveling to the great state of California recently.  The views of the sea, beach, and amenities were lovely to say the least.
In this picture I tried to capture the iconic Californian wooden struts. The blue building adds a sharp contrast to the drizzly weather. The Ferris wheel served as my rule of thirds guide. I feel that the grungy text I added to the blue building, gave this picture that extra "oomph"of contrast. Overall, I feel that this picture successfully captures that larger than life look to the Santa Monica Pier, and could easily become part of a postcard.

With the design of this image I tried to play off of the rule of 3rds by aligning the silhouettes on the far left line. I also tried to enhance the natural light of the photo by bringing out the color in the background without letting become the focal point in the picture. Apple dominates the world with it's innovative technology, we collaborated to convey an image that shows this. Our target audience is Apple fans who eat, sleep, and breathe Apple products. The power of the Apple logo automatically tells readers who this ad is about. We wanted to show that even when the world is sleeping when the sun is going down, Apple doesn't. Apple products are always at our fingertips. Apple designers are still up working on new ideas or at least dreaming them up in their sleep because they also eat, sleep, and breathe Apple.
Within the composition we used a well balanced landscape image. The background is broken in three separate areas, the blue/orange sky, the actual city and the plain black background at the bottom. We justified the text boxes in such a way that it created a clean-cut edge for the border. The blue and orange section builds trust and is inviting to the target audience, automatically the Apple logo draws the audiences eyes to it. We used a simple font, Helvetica Neue Thin, to convey the clean cut message of Apple. The black background provides a perfectly clear nesting area for our text.

I have always admired National Geographic's bold yet simplistic styling.  They use fantastic, awe-inspiring images that draw viewers into the subsequent story.  For this assignment, I wanted to try and imitate that design.  This photo was taken at the Lake District in England.  I enhanced the colors a little bit--made them a little more vibrant and went with a font that had clear, straight lines.

I didn't want to include a lot of text because, like National Geographic, I wanted the photo to communicate the peaceful mood of the area.  I used Adobe InDesign and followed the magazine layout template with the three-grid system.

Your Friendly Neighborhood - Concert Poster

Assignment Four
Your Friendly Neighborhood

For assignment four I decided to create a concert poster. Within this concert poster you can see the construction of composition and the mixture and varying text levels, sizes and fonts. The poster displays the feel of the band and its members. After looking at a concert poster the viewer should be able to get a certain feeling of what the band is like as well as get the information of the concert quick and easy.

The poster is a good demonstration of clean and simple lines. The viewers eyes can easily follow sentence by sentence, word by word getting the information they need regarding the upcoming concert. When I took the photo I had the idea of a poster in mind. I felt that using the method "rule of thirds," I then could use the blank space to display a information about an upcoming concert. Next I decided to make all the hints of white in the picture pop to then enhance the significance of the white text. Then I lightly blurred out the edges of the picture to make the wording and band members the focal point. Finally I decided to work on the balance of the picture by aligning all the text and the images I included.

I decided to do center spread for this assignment, and I wanted to experiment with a difficult cutout. I used the pen tool because the background was hard on hard, and it seemed the only way to be precise. I placed the A-Rod off center on the left page, and put the bat and pull quote on the right to create balance. In order to create contrast and unity, I selected a bold headline font, and used a font similar to what is found in the Yankees' logo for the drop cap and pull quote. I also made the background Yankees' gray, and tinted it to 30 percent in order for the text to remain legible and readable.

I had one of my teammates take this photo of me after we had finished up a service project. After the project the kids were over joyed that we had come to spend time with them. This was a good experience for me because it reminded me that they're are people that look up to me and that my actions influence others. When the picture was taken it was a little blurry. I did the effect color splash and messed with the sharpness of the picture. I darkened the picture to make myself look like a shadow to let people put themselves in the picture when they look at it.

Assignment 4 - Katherine Poulson

For my fourth assignment, I chose to try a semi-deconstructionist approach with the simplicity of minimalism.  For this assignment, I took my Photography business and tried to do a sample web page that would convert easily to a hand out or even a back of a business card. What I did, was take this image of the couple's hand (which I took on a recent shoot) and I removed the background with Photoshop. I then used photoshop to manipulate the layers of the background and I moved the opacity around with the heart cutouts and the letter. Then I put it all together trying to keep to the rule of thirds. I feel like at this point in time the page is text heavy, so if I were to use this as an actual page, I would end up taking a lot of the text off and leaving the essence in more of a list format.

What this is trying to convey, is how easy and affordable my photography is. It's about memories and love. It's about the family less than the highly stressful studio shoots where you pay lots of money for very few pictures. If I had time to write it all, this is what would go in the text as well as pricing and policies.

I took this picture in Madrid one evening during my study abroad. I like how the photo portrays the beauty of Spain. The original photo was a little dark so I decided to brighten it up. This highlighted the beautiful colors in the sky and lighted up the street and cars which helps you to see the entire picture. I  sharpened this which brought out the clarity in the clouds and the buildings. I decided to put the font up at the top so it doesn't get in the way of the content but is still big enough to get its message across. Assignment 4 -- Creela Belle Howard

After seeing the free screening of the documentary The Abolitionists, I decided for this assignment to do a poster for the BYU Anti-Human Trafficking Club.
I wanted the main colors to be red and blue; red for outrage at the disgusting people who participate in selling minors for sex, and blue for sorrow and sympathy for the victims. The red is slightly orange to make the colors more complementary since orange is opposite of blue in color wheel.
The style is minimalism, as you can tell, because I didn't want the visuals to distract from the message, which is to fight against this horrific, criminal industry that exists in our world.
I would have preferred to use a photo of a young girl, but instead i took a photo from online and traced it with brush tool. I wanted the outline of the girl to be very minimalist to emphasize how these girls are being de-humanized, to just be objects rather than human beings. I used repetition for the "bars," indicating these girls are prisoners. I aligned the capital letters so it would easy to focus on these three words in large font. I used proximity for the small words and the large words to group them together. In placing the text, I used rule of thirds a little bit.

Assignment 4- Lorraine Bailey "vintage postcard"

For this composition project, I decided to create a French vintage postcard. I used three pictures I took while in France last summer. I selected these pictures because I really liked the different angles and perspectives. It is different from the usual postcard pictures. I grouped all three pictures on an off-pink/beige background and applied a vintage filter to the whole picture. I also used canva.com to play with the transparency of both the picture and the typography to give the postcard a fainted look. I also applied a filter called "pencil sketch," which gives the postcard a little bit of texture and age. I then applied a vignette to frame the overall picture. I used Photoshop to add the different vintage stamps in the top right corner.

With this layout I wanted to use something motivational that was also eye catching and relatable. I chose this picture because it represented the idea I wanted to get across and matched well with the text. It also gave me the chance to do something cool with leading lines in directing the reader's eye to the title. Unfortunately it came through kind of pixely but with more Photoshop training I am sure I could fix it. I wanted the entire spread to represent steps in order to take charge of your life.

We'll be using it as an advertisement for our daily workshops, but I think it could also double as a single page spread in a BYU-operated magazine or something like that. The goal is that it will be more eye-catching (hopefully for the right reasons) than the poster that we have up now.

We chose the color scheme of the black, white, blue, and grey a few months ago so I wanted to incorporate that for consistency. We also started using the vector-style images as part of our advertising, so I incorporated that with the smaller images.

I tried to use the rule of thirds to separate the blue boxes of text from the actual photo. I think there are some things that could be done to make it better, but I'm not sure how to change it while still keeping with the color scheme and themes. Any suggestions/critiques would be great!

Assignment 4 Ally Hawkins

I decided to make a fake album cover for my friend who is an aspiring musician. I wanted to take a picture that used the compositional elements we have been taking in class. I decided to put her on the thirds and put a filter on it to make the color scheme more uniform. I decided to lower the exposure and brighten the whites. I also used a certain typography that I thought would go well with the overall feeling of the image.

Lisa Crofts--- Assignment #4

I took this picture at the 2014 Concert for Valor in Washington, D.C. It was the greatest concert EVER... did I mention it was free? Eminem, Rhianna, Carrie Underwood, Jessie J, the Black Keys, Zac Brown Band, and the list goes on. Though I originally took this picture in black and white, I decided to highlight the Capitol building and stage by adding a slight blue hue. I used bright colors of blue, green, and teal in order to frame and kept the outside of the circle black and white to add contrast. Epic concert? Epic Picture.

Assignment 4- Justin Alworth

For this assignment, I wanted to use a good balance of color.  I took this picture on my way back from Massachusetts and I love the contrast between the dark blue sky and the bright white clouds.  For this assignment I really wanted to have a good balance of color for Southwest, so I added their new logo in the corner, then added a little design to the top to even it out.  I wanted to enhance or lighten the end of the wing so that you could see southwest.com on the wing but keeping it dark also ads subtle color to tie it all together.

Alex Trump - Assignment # 4 - Composition

My assignment is an album cover that I created for my brother's band. As he is finishing up an album, he needed a CD insert and a CD cover. Although it may seem a little weird, the picture has a lot of symbolism to it. My brother is very off the mainstream, even describing himself on twitter as a "bold wallflower", and musically he is very, very talented. I wanted to portray his step aside from the mainstream (mannequins) and show that he thinks differently from the world, and in that way is separated from them. I wanted it to also show that he doesn't pay attention to what the world does, and has his own way of thinking. All images are my own (except for the mannequins).

Rhees Jackson-Assignment #4 Composition

I made this design for one of my favorite brands. Orvis is a fly fishing an outdoor sports clothing company. It's been around for a long time. I found the right font and color scheme which was awesome. The brand feel is supposed to be classy and clean, so I decided to stick with a white background and a classy picture.  I tried to stick with a vertical rule of thirds and I feel like it turned out pretty well considering my photoshop skills.

Assignment #4 - Recipe Book Cover

This is the cover to a pretend dessert recipe book. I put it together using Illustrator. The font is called "Give me some Sugar," which seemed appropriate, and I chose pastel colors to go along with the cute girly vibe. I chose circles as a reoccurring shape, and used three large ones to create balance. Like the title of the book, I wanted to keep the design really simple, but still fun.

Assignment #4 Person of the Year - Robbie Dorius

I thought it would be really fun to take a great friend that I admire and make her the Person of the Year. Time magazine recognizes a distinguished public figure each year and writes a feature story about their influence on society. Jess has a genuine, authentic simplicity about her. I wanted to capture an image and design that best depicts the reasons why I feel she is worthy of being the Person of the Year. Thus, Simply Jess.

Assignment #4 - Ryan Wells

I decided that I would make something that would both fulfill the requirements for this assignment and also help to further my pursuit in one of my startup companies. We will be reigniting the company after a previous try and providing lead generation and directory syndication to storage facilities. In addition to the overall layout of this piece, I created the logo and wrote all of the copy.

The image was given to me by one of the partners who had it from a previous venture he did with storage -- so I'm not sure if it was a stock image but I liked it, so I hope I was ok to use it? As for the color scheme, I tried to make it bold while meanwhile easy to understand and read. This will be sent directly to storage facilities around the state.

It took a surprising amount of time to make all the copy fit and look good, my brother helped teach me how to add the subtle but effective lines for the footer in photoshop. I used chunking for the copy and a variety of alignment styles to mix. This project was pretty fun.
