Assignment #2 - Rebecca Dabney

Recently I have experienced so many negative comments about people and I have seen many people who lack confidence because they allow others to dim their light. I think this quote is powerful and it shows that no matter what we can radiate a light to the world for the positive. I like the image I put with it because in a big room a simple small flame can light the entire thing.

Assignment #2 - Marissa Liu

I took this photo last summer one time that I went paddle boarding on Utah Lake with some friends. First, I edited the photo to make the colors a little more vibrant. I used Sunday as the font for "Make your own" because I like the fact that it's all caps and really grabs your attention. I used Vampiro One as the font for "adventure" because I like the casual cursive and free-spirited feel. To me this picture is what summer is all about--being spontaneous and enjoying the outdoors with friends! I think life is so much more enjoyable when you make your own adventures, and I think everyone should do the same!

Photo Assignment #2: Play Ball

I'm really excited for major league baseball to begin, and the hashtag #BaseballBegins has been circulating on social media for some time now. I didn't really have the ability to get a unique photo, so I found this stock image and I loved it. The weathered, beaten down skin of the ball shows how hard the game is, and how much work has been done. I found a classic baseball font on dafont.com to give the photo a classic feel, and used a contemporary all caps font to show how baseball is still relevant now.

"Be Free" by Shauna Holdaway

I chose this picture and this quote because I wanted to convey something that makes people feel free and relaxed. Especially mid-semester like this, things get busy. I think this call to action tells people that we have control over our lives and are the only ones who can make ourselves feel free. I adjusted the contrast of the picture a little in Photoshop and then added the typography. I chose something that seemed smooth and effortless, just like the message I am trying to convey. Bob Marley may have been high most of the time but he was definitely a relaxed person. I am not telling people to go get high but simply to clear out the mind and relax. I think the colors in this are also warm and calming as well, adding to that effect.

Yo, yo, yo. This is my project. I wanted to use a very simple all caps typeface. It is looks elegant and adds to the feeling that I conveying with the picture. It is a strong typeface that adds a sense  of confidence to the overall outlay of the ad.

Picture assignment 2, "Disregard the police", Michael Taylor

I wanted to make an ad for a skate boarding company. I wanted to show that people should be able to skate wherever they want and not have to pay attention to the rules that authority gives telling where and where not you can skate.

For this picture I decided to take the picture so you can tell there is a skateboarder on top of a car and inside of a parking garage to show that he is breaking the rules and skating wherever he wants to. The lighting in the picture made it hard to see the skateboarder so I touched it up so you can see him better. I also decided to use the font “abril fatface” and put it in all caps to convey the feeling that you can do whatever you want.

This is one of the bands that my sister-in-law has gotten me into since I joined the family, and it was something that I was able to bond with her over. So I made this from scratch. I used their logo and put it on the background of a grungy wall. I got the band members signatures of different articles of clothing off the internet and darkened them in using FX color overlay. I used a type writing font and made it look like it came off a ribbon by using the rectangle tool.

Honestly I just wanted to learn to do the flames for words. I found a website that showed you how to take regular words and turn them into flames. I chose revolution because it seemed to match the photo well. I thought it would look interesting as a movie cover.

Gabe McFadden -- Harry Potter

This is my favorite quote from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and probably my favorite quote ever. It's from a series of posters I'm making for my mom's library to promote reading!

I like this quote because like Snape, I feel like all my love is unrequited always. Plus, its just so succinct--"Always."

For those of you who aren't dumb nerds like me: The quote happens when Snape casts his Patronus and it's still a Doe, the same as Lily Potter, the love of his life and his reason for not being loyal to Voldemort. After everything that has happened, he still loves her.

To make it I found a font I liked online (called Bebas) and a vector image of the Doe, Snape's patronus. I put them together in photoshop and now you guys are all looking at it.

Assignment 2 - Take a Chance - Taylor Neuffer

This picture was taken in a by a high mountain like near Bear Lake Idaho. After serious internal struggle, I finally mustered up the courage to do a back flip of the cliff into the lake. This picture with the simple words "TAKE A CHANCE" is a call to take certain risks in order to experience the most of life. I wanted to have the font compliment the beauty of the natural around but also stick out in a simple way.

Project #2 - Get High

I didn't take this picture, but I did star in it. It was taken in November at my wedding. I felt like the Beatles lyrics fit the image well. I tried to incorporate a style of typography that respected the integrity of the photo, and matched the mood as a whole. The image wasn't manipulated, I just created a new layer for the text. I wanted to choose a font (Oswald) and color, that subtly pop off the image without distracting too much. The mood is positive, inspiring, and . . . UPLIFTING!

Sarah Ballard Assignment #2

This picture was taken up in Park City this past weekend close to the Canyons Resort. I went on a walk with my younger brother just before sunset and I love the colors that we were able to capture. I only adjusted the brightness in this picture, no other edits were made. The text is from a poem by Robert Frost called "The Road Not Taken." I chose two different fonts (Lantinghei & Savoye) to emphasize the last line in the poem, "All the difference." The message of this photo is to embrace life and choose the path that is right for you. I hope that it inspires others to think about the choices they are making right now and to enjoy life's journey in the way that makes them the happiest.

Michael White Project #2 - Vaccines

For my project I wanted to try an infographic. I have never made an infographic before but I figured this would be the opportunity to learn. I wanted to choose a current topic that has relevance and some controversy, so I chose to make my call to action about vaccinations.

I chose the colors red and white for contrast and made the text red and bold to give it more of a forceful feel. I also chose the font vollkorn because of the san serif in all upper case lettering. I felt this gave the text more of a bold message to the reader. I also wanted to emphasize the numbers so that when you initially look at the infographic your eye first see the numbers.

Originally, I had the text and the images symmetrical, but that gave it a bland look and no visual appeal. As I know I am amateur in making infographics, I felt that by using the spacing between the images and content that I did that I was able to give it a more visual appeal and and easier to read method.

Spencer King - Typography Assignment

I took this picture in Seattle at an old abandoned gas plant. I changed the coloring to give it an almost imaginary feel instead of just a color picture. I photoshoped in an astronaut which seemed to contradict the idea of what is abandoned but rather reaching for new heights. Next to the astronaut is a quote I have had for a long time. Also I wrote several different words throughout the pipes that are influential in my life. Seeming my own call to action.

Turn Off The Tap

My poster, "Turn Off The Tap" was made for the WWF. I wanted to emphasize how important one drop of water is to the environment, by showing what it is affecting when we let the tap drip. It is drying up rivers, lakes, etc. and causing problems throughout the world to humans as well as animals. The font is Avenir Next. I chose a more simple font because I didn't want it to distract from the message, while conveying what needed to be said.

Assignment 2 - Happiness

Assignment #2 - Happiness - Katherine Poulson

So, I took this picture for my friend's sister while doing a 3 month photoshoot. Her son was very hard to work with as we were trying to put him in different poses and outfits and to make hims smile. It was getting frustrating. But as I was going through to edit those pictures, I thought to myself that happiness, even when it's hard to get in pictures, truly isn't in the things we own. It's in these little bundles of joy that slobber all over us and cry until we have headaches. In the gospel especially, happiness is in the soul. To make more of a stark image, I made the image black and white in photoshop, took out the background texture, and played with the shadows and highlights to brighten up the whites and black out the blacks. Then I took the image into canva and added the wordings and the decorative boarder.

I used the quote because it fundamentally conveys the very thoughts I had while editing this image. I also chose the font because it is fun and lighthearted, but still easy to read and not super cheesy. I wanted it to be fun and classy at the same time. I chose a light grey so it would be readable and stand out from the background.

Theodore King Assignment #2- Celebrate

This picture was taken in California on my little cousins first birthday. A large number of us gathered at the park to celebrate his birthday. I am not even sure if my little cousin realized it was his birthday, but either way he was enjoying himself. The message of this photo is to Celebrate Life. It is not always the best thought but life can end at any moment. The opportunities we have to celebrate another year should never be taken for granted. I used a font called "the rainmaker". I used it because I felt that it captured the simplicity of the picture and calling to celebrate life. I used color splash to emphasize my little cousin in the picture.

Cameron Moon-Assignment #2-Play on

I wanted to stick with my video game theme from the last assignment and created a video game controller out of the text. I used 8 bit wonder, a font that reminds me of classic video games and really gives this a "video game feel." I tried to incorporate as many popular video games as would fit. The goal is to inspire people to continue to play their favorite video game.

I added a light green background to create a less in your face effect. I went more for simplicity rather than trying to go over the top. This matches the simple phrase "play on."

Stacey Koller-Assignment 2- Wake Up!

I played around with the lighting on this image, enhancing the haze in the background and sharpening the foreground.  I enhanced the colors slightly.  I used both the overlock and script fonts to deliver the message.  I'm still pretty novice at this stuff, and compared to most of the class I'm lightyears behind, but I'm really enjoying the experience.

I wasn't sure what call to action I wanted to incorporate when I began working on this, but I love sunrise and the idea of waking up.  I thought President Monson's quote paired nicely with the message.  Don't wait to live life-today is just as good a day as any.

Kyle Lemperle - Assignment #2 - "Illusion"

Michael Jordan's birthday was this week and so I found myself watching multiple documentaries and highlights to celebrate the day of the G.O.A.T. Though I didn't take this picture, I wanted to find one that would captivate who he was as a player and a person, and I found this. If there's one lesson that can be learned from him, it's that limits don't exist. We, as in we individually, put the boundaries and limits on our capabilities. MJ taught this by defying one of the greatest odds: gravity. So with that said, the emotion I wanted the viewer to take from this is courage and confidence, knowing that he/she can overcome any limits if they put their heart in it.
I touched up the picture just a little bit. I thought the picture would be cooler and bring the words out more if I did black and white. I thought black and white would go well with the word "illusion." I also added sharpness to the Michael and the basketball hoop.
Because this is an actual quotation from His Airness, I chose a font that would read like a quotation. I wanted the first portion to be very simple, not demanding attention. Then I switched the font and size for "illusion" to bring the viewers eyes to it, because it's the most important word.

Follow Your Adventure by Esther Cabrera

This picture was taken in the Teton Mountains in Wyoming a couple years ago. I was looking through old photo albums and stumbled upon this beauty. A friend once told me to go camping at least once a month and hiking and least once a week. I have not been able to live up to this lately but was reminded from this picture that I need to step away from the pressures and sometimes tedious motions of the world and follow my own adventure. I have peace and energy when I am surrounded by nature and animals and I encourage others to follow their own adventure whatever it may be.

I messed with the saturation and warmth of the photo to bring out the richness of the green fields and trees and the blue sky. I used the font called "A year without rain" because it has a rustic unscripted outdoorsy feel to it.

Assignment #2: Never let go - Chelsea Luke

For this project I decided to use a picture of my sister and her cute little family. My sister and her husband have experience tons of tough trials over the years, but one of their greatest joys in their life is my nephew Rhein. Rhein was a miracle baby and he has taught my sister, her husband, and our family so much about being grateful for what we have and to never let go of those things because they are true blessings even when we don't see it.

My call, as stated above, is a call to be aware and to maintain the happiness in our lives: never let go. There is always something lurking to ruin our day, and all we have to do is let that negativity in the door in order for it to effect us, but we can't let those things deter us from our goals and desires.

When editing the photo I put the emphasis on the family and blurred everything else out.  I then added the white quicksand style font to pop in contrast to the green background, but to also compliment the white on the clothing.

Assignment 2 : Nathan Innis

I attended a Sundance film festival documentary a few weeks ago called "Most Likely To Succeed."  It detailed flaws in public education, and presented possible alternatives to our current system. As someone looking back on his public educational experience, I really related to the issues being discussed. At the core of the issue is standardized testing; it isn't a fair measure of how a teacher is performing, and multiple studies show students will not retain much of the material after the test is over. Also, there is never going to be a case in the "real world" where you are confined to a desk with a pencil and calculator, not allowed to talk to anyone, and not allowed to look things up. This movie opened my mind to what really is important in an educational experience, and what I want my future children to learn. The website on this poster provides information as well as community-organizing tools for concerned citizens to initiate change where they live.

I chose to use IM Fell English Small Caps for the title line to give it an old-fashion feeling, suggesting that our public education system is terribly outdated. For the rest I used Volkorn, a newer European font I discovered that I felt fit progressive and enlightened ideals. In lieu of taking a picture, I created a blackboard backdrop, drawing attention to the short story / call to action that is presented.

"ART IS EVERYWH"

Kyle Lewis: Never leave adventure unattended

This image that I took at a beach in Australia captures how I feel about living my life. I have always felt that people leave behind adventure and once in a lifetime opportunities for the boring and unrewarding. I took this picture to capture that feeling, but never put words to describe it. The two surfboards were left unattended by some random beach goers and I so badly wanted to snatch one up and take them out to the waves. I was excited to finally put words to this picture expressing that feeling. I made the picture black and white because I feel that it makes the surfboards look more lonely and unattended. The quote I used comes from my feelings from that moment, and calls others to find adventure.

I used a font called 'champagne & limousines'. I felt that the sans serif font matches the outdoor casual feel of the image. I left the main part of the text regular with the skinny strokes to emphasize the loneliness. However, I bolded and capitalized 'ADVENTURE' because that is the call to the reader that those surfboards are an opportunity to experience adventure. I think that the combination of the picture and the text all ties in to tell the same message and evokes feeling to not let life pass by.

Assignment 2: Imagination - Kaushay Colvin

For this assignment, I used a picture that I took one day while reminiscing on my childhood. I have two younger sisters and I wanted to create something that would be a call to embracing imagination. I used PhotoShop to edit some of the colors in the photo and made the chalk drawing pop a bit more.
I used the Savoye font on the word imagination because it elicits a dreamy feel. I used PT Sans in a smaller size to convey the paradox of realistically trying to hold onto imagination.

My goal was have it be a call to hold on to imagination from the perspective of someone who has started to lose it, hence the simpler fonts.

I used a variation of the color of my shirt in the image as the font color in order to create more unity in the photo.

I commented on the photos of Nathan Pope, Alex Clark, Robert Hill, Camilla Crawford, and Lori Bell.

Anna Umstead - AidData Infographic

I work for AidData which tracks international aid, its pretty confusing for some of the new employees as they try to figure out what exactly we do, and then what people do with the information we geocode. So I created this infographic, I'm not sure if it makes a lot of sense to people who don't work there, but it helped some of my coworkers. I used the color scheme of the company I work for, so not my favorite but it goes with their branding.
The call to action is obviously to a very specified group, but as my team members understand what the end result of our work is they are able to see some effect our tedious work has.

Picture Assignment #2: Life's Short. STUNT IT. - Ashley Frehner

First off, Rod Kimble from the movie Hot Rod is a LEGEND. "Life's short. Stunt it," is pretty much my mantra and if you hit up my Instagram, you will find it is also my bio. Basically, I like to live life to the fullest. So when my family went cliff jumping this past summer at Lake Mead and my cousin's friend not only joined in, but volunteered to jump first, I had to capture the moment. This was just seconds before his jump turned into a sort of gainer and earned him lifetime respect in my book.

After deciding that I was going to use this quote, I immediately knew that this was the picture that I wanted to use. I feel like the calm waters below and clear skies above give it that YOLO, get crazy, summer feel. The size of the thirty foot cliff in comparison to his body and the protruding rocks below help show the caliber of the jump and nerve it took for him to take the plunge. The font I selected is called Allerta Stencil and the letters are simple, squared off and unfinished. The stenciling gives it a rough, thrown together feel like the quote itself. Overall, I think the typography, message and image encourage the viewer to take a risk.

Assignment 2 - Typography "ART IS EVERYWH"

ART IS EVERYWH
My goal when taking this picture was to display the power of minimalism. In addition, I remember our professor showing us how our brain has become wired to read or infer things in certain ways. Chances are you probably glanced at the picture, read the text, and your brain inferred that ART IS EVERYWHERE. Nevertheless, the text only says ART IS EVERYWH which serves to prove our professors point.

Art can be found everywhere; we just need to look for it. So here is my suggestion to you, find beauty in the mundane. Find beauty in the averageness of this world, for it is awesome. Embrace the symmetrical and asymmetrical elements of life. Love your imperfections, as well as the imperfections of this world, because ART truly IS EVERYWHERE.

| Mophie Ad | Assignment 2

Our society is making a huge shift towards integrating technology into our lives. I made an ad promoting an external battery pack called mophie. For this assignment, I spent a lot of time experimenting on new ideas that could help make my typography stand out. Ultimately, I found that my message needed to be more simple and less complicated. I wanted my message to highlight upon something the audience could relate to. I learned that the copy doesn't have to hit you upside the head to be effective.

As for the techniques I used in my typography, I kept everything simple. I want my copy to be easy to understand, but subtle enough to believe in. I used Photoshop for the images, and then I put everything together on Illustrator. I used the rulers to create alignment between the different components of the ad. I added weight in the main heading to emphasize the call to action. I created a lot of white space in the ad and repetition in the copy. In addition, the positioning of the images and copy created flow between the copy.

Picture Assignment 2--"Embark"--Alex Clark

This is a picture of my companion and me during my mission in St. Petersburg, Russia. "Embark" is a call to live life to the fullest, even if you have to take some chances and climb some snowy mountains along the way. There's also a Gospel parallel to D&C 4:2.

"Therefore, O ye that embark in the service of God, see that ye serve him with all your heart, might, mind and strength, that ye may stand blameless before God at the last day."

The tree stands at the edge of the "cliff," and can also symbolize the Tree of Life. The sun can represent Jesus Christ, the Light of the World.

I chose a filter that brought out the contrast between the light and dark shadow, and I also sharpened and gave more clarity to the edges found in the photo. "Embark" is written in "Rockwell" font because I thought it was simple but thick and dark enough to complement the light/dark contrast.

Assignment #2: BOUNCE

For this assignment I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to combine aspects of my life that I am passionate about, hairstyling, beauty products, and advertising. As a hairstylist my favorite hair texture to style is curly because it allows you to be creative and often has a mind of its own.

I tried multiple fonts before deciding on "Simpleman Regular." I chose this font because it appears to be in line with L’Oreal’s brand image; the font is simple but still very feminine. In Photoshop I used the warp text feature to add an 18% bend to the "MAKE YOUR CURLS" text so that it would appear to be bouncing on the background. I also used a 60% bend in order to make the word "BOUNCE" jump above the actual product to imitate the bounce of the curls the product would create when used. I utilized white space to create a light, clean background again in fitting with L’Oreal’s fresh image.

(I was unable to take a photograph that captured curls perfectly so the girl in this picture is an online model.)
