Into the Woods - Hannah Maines

This picture was taken on Whidbey Island, Washington, my husband’s hometown, during this past winter break. Usually I hate visiting the island because I feel like a fish out of water there. The culture is very different from what I grew up in. To get anywhere takes at least 45 minutes, and usually consists of a ferry ride. Cell service is rare. Everyone wears Tevas and talks about records and movies I’ve never heard of.

However, after my last visit to Whidbey, I didn’t want to come home. Being there forced me to slow down; it forced me to look at the world with a new sense of discovery and wonder. Everything became beautiful and awe inspiring. I took a particular interest in the dense woods, and how easy it was to “lose yourself” in them. I wanted to convey those feelings of wanderlust and appreciation for the world in this photo. I used Photoshop to slightly saturate the trees and brighten the image.

I commented on the following: Shauna Holdaway, Taylor Neuter, Esther Cabrera, Ruben Felix, Lincoln Selk

  1. I love how vast the forest looks in this shot, a new world that you want to explore. Great use of the person in the foreground as well, nice photo.

  2. Awesome photo! I haven't thought of this for probably ten years, but it makes me want to read the book Hatchet. Nostalgic.

  3. A great example of when the rule of thirds does not apply - brilliantly composed.

  4. I like the idea behind this photo. I can tell you guys had an adventure, and this one picture looks like it could be a cover. Very well done.

  5. I really like the lighting and colors. The grayness of everything is really powerful. Plus the angle of the trees makes them look so daunting.

  6. I like the tree leading my eyes upward through the image. His body also runs in the same direction as the trees giving a feeling of uniformity. The height of the trees give it a feeling of intimidation as well

  8. I love the angle of this picture. The trees appear to be so much bigger than him and it creates a sense of admiration for God's creations, and how powerful nature can be.
