Changing an image from color to black and white can alter the original mood and meaning. For my final project, I wanted to draw attention to that fact. I came up with this mock-up magazine design layout. I kept the design simple, with blocks of black and white to offset the images and the text. I used a couple images I shot during a photography course, which I altered with photo-editing software. I removed all saturation and bumped up the contrast, shadows, and highlights. Making an image black and white lends it a nostalgic feeling. Not only that--it's simpler, and, for me, easier to look at. There's no overload of color, noise, and movement.
I was shooting for a modernist/minimalist feel with the composition of these two pages. It is a style that seems to be rising in popularity, with large and powerful companies such as Apple leading the way. I relate to the modernist/minimalist design because it's refreshingly bare-minimum. That was the bottom-line goal I hoped to achieve with this project: less is more.
