Creela Belle Howard -- Final Project

My number one hobby is creative writing. Last summer, I started a draft for a novel, so for this project I decided to design a book jacket for it. It would take too long to explain the plot of the novel, but suffice it to say it takes place on a university campus, a campus that has old, colonial style buildings so I decided to use the Maeser building as the background and I had my friend Aley pose for me on the steps, modeling as the protagonist. It was a cloudy day so I had to brighten the photo, plus increase the saturation to make it look more colorful. For some reason blue light was reflecting off of the edges of the roof so I had to get rid of that by selecting those areas and decreasing the saturation. It took me a while to figure that out. I didn't know what publishing company I should fictitiously use so I just named a fake press company after myself. I added the gradient because it is a nerve-racking thing to for a freshman to go to college, especially where they think they might not fit in or be welcomed so I wanted to give the impression that she is going into a scary place -- the unknown. For the left cover flap I made up a website for readers to go to, used the picture i had put with my mission papers (it's the only good picture of myself). The right flap has the summary, and the back cover has an excerpt from my novel and fake comments by real authors, some you might recognize.
I downloaded the font for the title Sagefield (the name of the university the story takes place at). I wanted a font that matched the colonial or old fashion style of the Maeser building. The rest of the text is the same serif font. I wanted a serif that could have an old-look to it but was readable. As for colors, I basically went with the colors in the photo. I tried to match the text colors with the tan-color of the building and the light green of the tree.

  2. Love the colors you used for the font and the picture in the background. The angle of the photo would look amazing in a double spread in a magazine.

  3. Wow, this looks great. Great background photo and copy. One suggestion would be to use a different color for your main headline so that it would stick out more.
