Samuel Clayton Picture #1 - "Eye of the Beholder"

With my growing little family comes many struggles and hardships. I work full-time, I go to school full-time, and when I do have time at home, I am either doing dishes, laundry, or homework. The time I can spend with my family is the best part of each and every day, but it is not always easy to be optimistic and happy when so much is on your shoulders to provide for them. So the emotion I wanted to illustrate in this photo is love.

The way I wanted to portray love was to make it look like I was putting on a pair of glasses while looking at a photo of my family. I blurred the glasses and I changed the color of the outside of the photo to black and white. The corners were blackened to represent my actual eye, as I if I were putting on the pair of glasses to bring into focus a colorful, bright photo of my family that I am holding in my hand. The structure of the image that we learned from class is emphasis, where I put the emphasis on my family.

The idea behind the entire photo is life can be hard, and you sometimes feel like you cannot go on any further because the path is dark and tough. However, if you bring into focus what is most important in life, for me it is my family, you begin to realize that how you perceive the world around you is what will shape the feelings you have towards life. Do not focus on the gray, blurry aspects of life, but focus on the people and things you love. The world is perceived in the eye of the beholder, so make sure you are focusing on what makes you most happy, and then it becomes clear that it is love that conquers all fear.

I commented on the following photos:
Robert Hill - Big Dipper
Kyle Lewis - Untouched
Rhees Jackson - Girl in Limbo
Lisa Ariel - Fortune Cookie
Kaushay Colvin - Figurine

  1. I love the emotion that you can feel in this photograph. The illusion of the glasses on the picture really makes me feel like I can see through someone else's eyes!

  2. The illusion is awesome! I love how you use color and light to show the difference between what's important and what's not. It's something I understood without you telling me.

  3. That is a cool idea, it took me a second to really see you were holding a picture, but after I saw it, it is fantastic!

  5. Sam, this is really cool. The focus is amazing. I love the natural border that happens by looking through the lens of the glasses. Really nicely done my friend.
