Kaushay Colvin Photo Assignment 1

This image is meant to be religiously symbolic. I set up the picture with a dark background to symbolize the darkness of life as well as something that symbolizes the unknown. Though the background is solid black, the placement of the angel over the white fabric creates a minimal amount of depth in the photo. I used the white fabric with lights underneath it to symbolize the light that can be found even in the darkest of times.

For me, this photo is something that most people can relate to. Even though our darknesses and our lights vary, for most, there is some sort of light and there is something that we can hold on to when the darkness comes creeping in.

To me, looking at this picture the eye immediately goes to the light in the fabric, and then the eye takes in the entire photo. The line between the light and the praying hands of the angel leads the eye up, and leads the viewer to look at the picture as a whole.
In this, I used the rule of thirds to keep the white fabric and lights in the bottom third of the picture and letting the black backdrop take up the rest. I also used the rule of thirds in the positioning of the angel. The line created by the angels side and the top of the shoulder places the angel in the furthest left third and a little into the center.

I commented on the pictures of Gabe McFadden, Shauna Holdaway, Taylor Neuffer, Cory Hruska, and Ruben Felix.

  1. This photo has a warm, soft feel to it, which is what I think you wanted to convey. Nice job utilizing the rule of thirds with the figurine.

  2. Man, this photo kind of blows my mind. Its almost like you altered the figurine to match the waves of the cloth beneath it, but as I looked a bit harder, the textures of the figurine compared to the cloth are all real. Great photo, I had to double take to see what was real and what was altered, and to me it all looks real and feels real, its relateable and just great work on the lighting and angle. Choice.

  3. Great colors and contrast. I really like how the wavy movements in the fabric sort of convey softness and peace while the dark background has lots of "noises" in it, which to me can represent the craziness of life that we need to escape sometimes.

  4. I really like the way you set it up--it really sets the mood for the action she is showing.

  5. I can definitely tell that you took the time to set up everything in the picture the way you wanted it.
