I wanted the photo to show the emotions worry and sadness. I worked to make it look very stylized-- kind of a caricature of a genderless, hyper emotional person. I also wanted to tell a really defined color story-- keeping everything very warm and in the same taupey color family. I was heavily inspired by this photo and also the National Geographic photo, the Afghan Girl. The whole photo should feel kind of like a rich old lady fading from her life of luxury, mixed with a clown, mixed with a poor orphan.
Techniques-wise: I set up the shoot against my wall in my apartment. We used natural lighting and a external flash attached to the camera pointing towards the natural light. In post I brought down the yellows, added greens and blues, whitened my eyes, took away the corer of a picture frame, an outlet, and phone jack on the wall behind me, smoothed out my skin, and other little things that helped color, clarity, and balance.
I commented on "Just around the Riverbend," Dillon Olson's photo, Hannah Mines' photo, Camilla Crawford's photo, and Ashley Frehner's photo.
It's obvious you put a lot of thought and time into this. Great job, it turned out really cool.
ReplyDeleteReally snappy picture! I love the lighting and how you maintained the same color tones, it reminds me of Annie Leibovitz's work. I think it captures those old-lady-clown-poor-orphan vibes perfectly.
ReplyDeleteThe simplicity of the picture's composition really allows the emotion to shine through.
ReplyDeleteSuper unique and creative. Fantastic job!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed this picture and the concept behind it. Props. Also that you worked with what light you had and created a canvas that would reveal that lighting. Great work.
ReplyDeleteI can tell that you put a ton of effort into this photo, and even though I can see how much you put into it, the photo also has this ease to it that makes it look natural and not contrived. (I hope that makes sense).
ReplyDeleteI also really like that you didn't follow the rule of thirds and that it works so incredibly well here. The photo really elicits emotion. Very thought-provoking. I love it!
