Marissa Liu - Assignment #1 - "Work for Success"

This is a photo that I took after a dance competition. This represents my world! As a ballroom dancer, my partner and I spend endless hours in the studio practicing and taking lessons. We dedicate our hearts and souls to this art that we love. Most people just see the glitz and glamour of dancing, but to me that's not it at all. I love it because of all the sweat, blisters, sore muscles, and everything else that goes into it behind the scenes.

That's why I love this picture! It's an incredible feeling when your hard work pays off and you take your bows as the winner of a competition, but that moment is fleeting. This is what it's like when you leave the dance floor: sitting on the floor in your warm ups in any free space you find, tattered shoes, and tired feet. That's when it all sinks in, and it's in that private moment that I remember why I truly love dance and why everything is worth it.

The only edit that made to this photo was making it black and white. I did this to compensate for the lighting of the competition venue.

  1. Marissa, I really like how your feet and everything directs the viewers eye to the trophy. It could be fun to have the trophy in color to highlight it?
