Final Project: Taylor Ricks - Happy Holidays

I decided to take advantage of the holiday season for my final project.  I had the opportunity to visit Draper City Park last week and I was impressed by the lights that had been hung on this tree.  I wanted to use this picture to create a holiday greeting card for the city of Draper.  I also adjusted the colors and shadows to make the people more visible in hopes of catching the spirit and the festive and family feel.  I kept the colors very simple with the holiday orange and red and the light grey and black to create contrast.  I divided the picture vertically into thirds with the center of the tree on the right and the text box on the left.  I also aligned the "Happy Holidays" near the top left intersection.  I used a more elegant font to match the season and the wreath image around the text.  As a Public Relations student, I also saw it fitting to promote the city and encourage more community participation by providing viewers with access to Draper City's website and inviting them to follow the city on social media.

  1. I love the color scheme and how you kept the whole ad very clean and simple. You used the rule of thirds with the text and the tree and it keeps everything visually pleasing. Good job!

  2. I second what Lindsey said, having the tree fit the rule of thirds was definitely the right move. The picture is amazing and the shades of orange really make this feel like a festive ad. Great picture!

  3. I also want to say that your color scheme is on point. I like that you did the slightly transparent third. Good use of the rule of thirds! Only comment is maybe play with the sharpness because the one guy in the front really blends in with the grass, but I also love that. Just really good job.

  4. This is very well done. I could see a city actually using this. The colors match the holiday feel and the type is complimentary to that.
