Assignment #1 by Ally Hawkins- Given up

When I look at this picture, I see a lot of different emotions being conveyed. However, one emotion that sticks out to me is the feeling of being defeated or giving up. As students here at BYU, school, church callings, and major life decisions are constantly overwhelming us. We often feel too stressed out to enjoy the simple things around us. Consequently, we feel like giving up, or just wanting stand still while our hectic life moves around us. I wanted this picture to show how sometimes life acts on us rather than us acting on it.
In order to dramatize this emotion, I decided to make it black and white. I also made the shadows and the blacks darker, while increasing the exposure. I decided to crop this picture so it followed the rule of thirds.

  2. I think the black and white gives the emotion a totally different feel. I love how you added that emphasizing the stress and anxiety. The face looks determined as well which gives the feeling of "never giving up."

  3. I like the picture. But I would have cropped it with the rest of her head still in the picture. It feels a little forced. Also, I got determination from the picture, not really giving up. But I love how you were able to turn it black and white. It looks professionally done, I like it!

  4. Thanks! I cropped it like that because I wanted it to be an extreme closeup. I really wanted to emphasize the eyes, freckles, and emotion. It really forces you to look at the face.

  5. I love that only her head is in focus; the expression on her face demands my attention.

  6. The black and white kind of evokes emotions that may not have even been there when you took the photo, and it really works. I like the composition

  7. I love the raw emotion in this photo! I think that the black and white filter on it helps portray the emotions this girl is feeling.
