Alex Skinner Assignment #4- In the shadow of giants

My purpose in the composition was to capture the small silhouettes of my friends among the the trees. In order to arrive here I had to be about 60 feet away from the couple and I had to wait until the sun was setting. The sunset is the color scheme i worked with. I have noticed that most sunset pictures invoke a triad color scheme and that is the same as this. The upper is a blue violet, the middle is a light yellow, and the bottom an orange. The most important thing of the entire thing is how the couple simply blends in with everything else going on. The tagline "in the shadow of giants" has so many different meanings for me. In principle I wanted to say in the shadow of the sun, but i realized how cliche that was. And then I saw the trees and how they are giants in comparison to the couple. Then my mind was blown further when i thought, the dancers are like giants to the grass/weeds below them, and the grass is a giant to the smaller critters below it. And then my second thought was, what's crazy is even among things so much bigger than them, love as a concept is so much bigger than anything. I love that "In the shadow of giants" can be interpreted in so many ways and the composition of the picture is huge for that. Were i too close to the couple there would be no meaning. But among the giant sky, the giant trees, the couple expresses so much. I chose the color for the text to match the sky so that the entire color spectrum is reached. I turned the opacity down so that the text wouldn't be distracting an almost blend in, but not too much so its readable. Also its placement is important because the first thing you see is giant tree in the middle to the couple on one of the grid lines down to the text. I am very happy with how this picture turned out. I also feel like this could be a cool cover for an album. In my personal opinion. haha.

  1. The picture is amazing. I feel like the text next to the people distracts from the contrast of them and the tree. maybe try having the text in the sky or something. Also i love the colors

  2. This photo is truly awesome. The caption fits very well. The colors of the sunset up against the silhouettes of the trees and people dancing is beautiful.
