Picture Assignment #1: Carrie Duford - A Bug's World at Night

My husband has an herb garden that we recently brought in from outside. (It’s getting too cold to leave them outside at night.) All of his plants are in pots, so it wasn’t that difficult; however it did get me thinking. I thought about perspective. The perspective of a bug to be exact. I wondered what the world would look like at night for a bug. To a bug, of course, the plant, itself, would be huge and on top of that the vast enormity of space would creep into the bug’s world. This is the particular mood/theme I tried to capture. A bug’s world at night. Most of us don’t realize, but bugs are actually quite busy at night and this, I believe, would be a perception of what it would be like for them. Some notes: notice that the picture is divided into thirds like we were speaking about today in class. It draws attention to the plant and its unique angle. The picture also balances light and dark. The light from the porch is enough to illuminate the plant, while the darkness creeps in from space. And finally, the negative space in the photograph helps contrast from the density of the leaves, but does not distract from the plants overall purpose.

  1. Cool concept. I really like how there's nothing distracting (in the background) from the focus on the plants. The coloring of the green is also pretty perfect.

  2. Very beautiful simple concept that makes you think about perspective.
