Samuel Clayton Assignment #4 - "Wake Up"

When trying to decide how or what I was going to do, I read from the text the different features to each layout, and decided upon the MINIMALIST LAYOUT. So the first thing I did was choose an image that was similar to what they described. This photo of me wakeboarding was taken at Lake Powell last year and since the season for a return visit is coming up, I felt this was an appropriate photo for the layout assignment. I edited the photo myself, adding the color lines and cropping it to add the white space.

In minimalist layouts according to the text, the cover is usually just one strong image with white space in the layout to convey the message. Furthermore, it also stated that minimalist layouts "often work outwards from the main photo or image, with page content balanced off or aligned to elements within the image.” So that is what I tried to accomplish by creating white space for the headline and body copy. The whole image uses movement through the location of me on the wakeboard using the rule of thirds, leading the eye through the use of the lines I added to point to the headline and text. I feel there is balance as well as other elements that we have learned previously such as color, position, emphasis, and lighting.

I Commented on the following posts for Assignment #4:
Nathan Innis - Layout
Ally Hawkins - Guitar
Lisa Crofts - Valor
Justin Alworth - Southwest
Rhees - Orvis

  1. I really like how you made the picture almost look a little distorted but it still has a crisp look to it. The style of the text is cool also

  6. This is an awesome "Kodak" moment. I like the typography as well. I would maybe only crop the photo so the wake boarder follows the rule of thirds a little more
