Project #1 - Tanner Wadsworth: urban irony
I was walking in downtown Provo on a cold, wet night when I saw this sign on the sidewalk. It appealed to my sense of irony, so I snapped it. Presumably it had blown away from it's fastenings as part of a campaign or display and ended up in the alley where I found it, which seemed equally destitute of both trees and economic opportunity. What I like about the image is the incongruity between the sign's message and the context of the picture. The only cheerful thing here is the rather trite slogan against the grimy concrete and the obvious dampness and general unpleasantness. I was even wearing my beater tennis shoes. Perhaps it's a bit of a social commentary.

I love the out of focus everywhere except on the sign. Everything else would distract from what you are trying to get at. But leaving other random things also makes the eyes focus even more on the sign. The shoes are necessary!
